Yoga for dummy (yours truly!)
As one of the few beginners (let's admit it - the only one!) in a class full of veterans who make the tree pose look easy, I have to say yoga is humbling. I have new found respect for yoga practitioners, truly. With the growing realization that all my work running and lifting weights isn't quite enough when it comes to keeping limber I signed up for a Yoga for Runners course Monday nights. And so, tonight I'll be in the warrior pose (or half-heartedly at least) while the pros around me make it look easy. I have to admit to feeling frustrated by it, but am hoping it gets easier.....wonder when I'll feel like a pro? Do you think I ever will?
I would have to agree. I am not the most flexible or coordinated individual, so starting yoga with a bunch of limber people was a bit daunting. But, I continue to advance my practice, albeit slowly, and have realized that I cannot compare myself to the others there, because we all practice for different reasons. I don't think I will ever feel like a pro, but I can feel good about the steps that I make each time I practice!
ReplyDeleteI'm a vinyasa yoga teacher - and what you're feeling is fairly common among athletes. If you start to practice regularly than you'll improve by leaps and bounds. In the first year of a regular practice people see improvements all the time.
ReplyDeleteIf you keep it up you will eventually feel like a pro... but it may be on your 10 year plan.
Thanks gals for the encouragement - nice to know I'm not the only one who feels slightly awkward...I am, however, determined to get better and your support is great!
